Washington County Courthouse

Watford Engineering, Inc. provided mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering design services for the new Washington County Courthouse. The facility includes approximately 40,000 square feet and was constructed with an overall construction value of $8.7 million.

The HVAC design includes an air-cooled chiller plant with a gas-fired boiler. Air distribution throughout the building is provided by variable air volume air handling units serving single-duct terminal units with reheat. Noise calculations were performed for all occupied spaces, and appropriate noise control measures were incorporated into the design. HVAC systems utilize digital controls with a web-based interface. Holding cells and similar secure areas include secure air devices and bars installed within ductwork. The parking garage and sally port areas were designed with dedicated ventilation systems and carbon monoxide monitoring.

Plumbing systems include low water consumption commercial-grade fixtures, domestic water distribution, sanitary waste and vent piping, and natural gas service. Penal fixtures were specified in holding cells and similar secure areas. Fire protection design includes wet-pipe sprinkler systems serving the main building, dry-pipe systems serving the parking garage, and standpipes provided in each stairwell. Holding cells and similar areas include vandal-resistant sprinkler heads.
